Specialty Carbon Black Pigment for Powder Coating
Specialty carbon black is commonly used as a black pigment in industrial production within China. It imparts a brilliant black color to products such as coatings, inks, plastics, rubber, color pastes, and paints, while also providing UV resistance.
In practical production, selecting appropriate dispersion equipment and dispersants is crucial to fully realize the various properties of pigment carbon black. Before dispersion, choosing a suitable wetting agent to adequately wet the pigment carbon black is recommended. After a proper wetting period, the initial grinding stage should not be too fast; otherwise, the newly created interfaces of the carbon black will not be wetted in time, leading to dispersion difficulties and a "pasty" phenomenon. Controlling the grinding speed can help reduce the occurrence of particle agglomerates. During this process, the operator's choice of dispersion equipment and dispersion technique also plays a role. As the pigment carbon black aggregates are gradually broken open, their specific surface area increases. If the rate of specific surface area increase surpasses the rate of wetting, the viscosity will rise rapidly. The viscosity will only stabilize once all new pigment surfaces are fully wetted.
The blackness of pigment carbon black is a critical technical indicator. Smaller particle sizes generally correspond to lower carbon black structure, making dispersion more challenging. Therefore, within acceptable cost constraints, it is advisable to choose dispersants and wetting agents with good dispersion performance. Utilizing high-performance dispersion equipment such as three-roll mills, high-speed dispersers, internal mixers, kneaders, and bead mills, combined with proper operational techniques, is essential to achieve good dispersion of the pigment carbon black.
